*What is bisphenol A? What does “BPA-free” mean?
Bisphenol A is a chemical compound that is often used in the production of polycarbonate plastics. It is found in many everyday products, including kitchen utensils and water bottles. In small amounts, this substance can cause hormonal changes in the human body.
The use of bisphenol A in baby bottles has been banned in the European Union since June 1, 2011. Wherever alternatives are available, these should be preferred. However, it remains uncertain which materials may be classified as questionable in the future. Scientific knowledge is constantly evolving.
It is important to consider how long food comes into contact with bisphenol A and what temperatures it is exposed to. Mineral water in plastic bottles can have long contact times – weeks or even months can pass between filling and drinking. Mineral-poor water in particular has a higher risk of reactions with bisphenol A compared to mineral-rich variants.
Many food cans and beverage cans are coated on the inside with a plastic that contains bisphenol A. In addition, cans are often heated several times to extend their shelf life, which may accelerate the release of bisphenol A into the food.
If you have the choice, use glass bottles or Acala Tritan bottles for water. Processed food in cans can be replaced by fresh alternatives. If cold food is mixed in a polycarbonate container for less than two minutes, the likelihood of significant amounts of plastic being released into the food is minimal due to the short contact time and lack of heat generation.
We are delighted that the material “Tritan”, which has been approved in the EU since mid-2010, is now also being used in Acala drinking bottles in Germany. Tritan has proven itself in the USA since the end of 2007 and has been used successfully there.

**Formaldehyde**
Some kitchen utensils such as wooden spoons, spatulas, mugs (also for hot drinks), plates and cutlery are made of melamine, a hard plastic. This releases formaldehyde above 70 °C. When in contact with acidic foods, such as fruit juices, formaldehyde can be released from the melamine even at lower temperatures.
Formaldehyde is a toxic gas that dissolves easily in water. In high concentrations, it can be carcinogenic and even lead to blindness. It can also have a negative impact on memory, concentration and sleep.
We recommend using stainless steel or glass bowls, drinking from glass or Acala Tritan bottles and using wooden spoons.
**Care instructions for your Tritan bottles:**
To maximize the life of your Tritan bottles, we recommend cleaning them by hand as often as possible. The salts contained in cleaning agents can attack the material and make it brittle. If you put the bottles in the dishwasher less often, you will be able to enjoy them for longer.
An effective method of cleaning is to use stainless steel cleaning beads together with a mild cleaning fluid. These beads help to thoroughly remove deposits. Your bottle will often be cleaner this way than in the dishwasher, as the water does not always reach the bottom.
This easy handling keeps your Tritan bottle in optimum condition and you can use it for a long time.
