What is ceramic actually?

Ceramic surrounds us in many different forms in everyday life. Whether crockery, food storage containers or floor coverings – it is impossible to imagine our lives without this versatile material. Decorative elements such as ceramic vases and bowls also enrich our living spaces and have been part of our culture for thousands of years. The oldest known ceramics come from the Jomon culture, which dates back as far as 13,000 years BC.

The term “ceramic” is derived from the ancient Greek word “keramos”, which means “baked clay” or “baked earth”. In ancient Rome, ceramics were referred to as “terra cotta”, which also means “burnt earth”. By sintering raw materials at high temperatures, new materials are created with a wide range of applications that go beyond sinks and tiles.
